Subject: Edgar Wins It in 11th Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 02:17:09 -0400 From: ddudley@buff (Don Dudley - Sun Microsystems) To: Don.Dudley@Sun.COM I'll keep this one brief. I just now saw Edgar Martinez single to give the Mariners a 5-4 victory over the White Sox at the Kingdome. Cora walked, A-Rod singled him to third and they walked Junior intentionally, giving Edgar a chance to hit it in the hole by the drawn-in infield. Pretty decent game, albeit 3hr, 37 min. The Mariners left 22 men on base. Rob Ducey homered in the bottom of the 9th to tie it after old friend Heathcliff Slocumb wild-pitched in the go-ahead run in the top of the inning. I wasn't aware, but they're building a new stadium, dubbed Safeco Field, due to open July 15, 1999 right next to the Kingdome. None too soon. Baseball was not meant to be played inside. And to think some (c.f., Thomas Boswell, Washington Post columnist writing in the Denver Post, July 10, 1998) criticize baseball at Coors Field ;-). This new stadium is an absolutely enormous structure. Of course they're going to be rolling the dice with Seattle weather; I expect a lot of doubleheaders, but it seems they've concluded that's the lesser of two evils. Next stop -- Bank One Ballpark, Braves vs. Diamondbacks, Saturday, September 19th. Good riddance to the DH, Don
